List of Survival Items that do not Expire

Over the last few articles, we discussed How to store gasoline and How to maintain seed storage. One similarity between both is we need to rotate the storage as the stock gets expired over time. But In this article, we’ll discuss a list of survival items that do not expire. Most of these are one-time purchases and will strengthen your survival readiness.

Though these items don’t have a set expiry date, you need to keep them in separate airtight bags or containers to avoid corrosion and degradation.

Knives

A set of survival knives and long knives will come in handy if you are in survival mode.

Candles

Storage of different sizes can be used in a power outage. Burn each category and get an idea about the light level and the burning time of each.

Compass / Map 

A compass and a map of the area are crucial for a survival kit. You need to pack these to avoid moisture.

Emergency whistle

A plastic emergency whistle is cheap and in the time of need, it could be a life-saving asset.

Water containers 

Invest in a set of good water containers. They need to be lightweight and also strong.

Cooking items such as pots, pans, and spoons

A basic set of cooking items could come in handy if you want to move away from your home. You may need to pack these to avoid moisture and it is best to check the quality of the cooking set from time to time to verify there is no corrosion. 

Shelter Kit / Tarp

When buying shelter kits you need to consider cold is not the only concern heat, and a bad atmosphere can threaten survival as well.

Threads and needles

You might want to do a quick DIY sewing job for your clothes, bags, and shelter kits. If a crisis hits you’ll have to sew what you already have as you won’t have many clothing choices.

So having a portable sewing kit could come in handy. 

Bolt cutters

If you face a long-lasting crisis there is no guarantee you might not have to scavenge for supplies. Keeping a bolt cutter in your arsenal would be a good idea as other tools cannot replicate the same task with the same efficiency.

Nails

In a long-lasting disaster, you will have to build shelters, fences, repair, and build. Keeping a collection of nails in different sizes and categories is recommended. 

Zip Bags

We can list a large list of zip bag usages from food to seed storage. Keeping a stock of different sizes can be useful. Reusability and less or nill exposure to moisture is a few added advantages of these.

Survival Bags

These are long lasting survival items that do not expire. Waterproof, lightweight yet strong backpacks for each family member are a must-have. Often these bags have metal supporters for the back. These backpacks are usually labeled in Liters. The number of Liters indicates the weight of how much water liters the bag can hold. When buying the bags for your family, it is vital to consider the age and weight each one can carry. Don’t go for fancy bright colors. 

You may want to stay low in a crisis so go for light colors or camouflage bags.
